The Supreme Court on Tuesday by majority decision of 6 – 3 ruled in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to join the election petition filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The nine-member panel last week heard arguments from the lead counsel for the NDC, Mr Tsatsu Tsikata who insisted the governing party offered President John Dramani Mahama the platform to contest for the presidency and was thus an interested party whose interest would be injured if it was not allowed to join the petition as a respondent. The petitioners are Nana Akufo-Addo (Presidential candidate of the NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (running mate to Akufo-Addo) and NPP Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey) The Supreme Court last Wednesday set January 22 to give its ruling on the suit by the NDC to join the petition brought by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, NPP’s Presidential Candidate and the two others. Doe Adjaho Elected As Speaker Of The Six Ghana Parliament

The Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic at thirty minutes past twelve midnight (12:30 am) today, the 7th day of January, 2013 elected Doe Adjaho as Speaker. Mr Adjaho who happens to be the youngest ever produced replaces Mrs Justice Joyce Bamford Addo as Speaker. Soon after the election, the new Speaker was duly sworn into office by the Chief Justice Theodora Wood. Hon. Doe Adjaho who until his election was the MP-elect for Akatsi South Constituency in the Volta region would be assisted by the Former Deputy Attorney General and MP for Cape Coast North, Ebo Barton Odro as well as NPP’s MP for Essikado/Ketan, Joe Ghartey as First and Second Deputy Speakers respectively. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho The leadership of the National Democratic Congress has confirmed to Radio XYZ that Edward Doe Adjaho has been confirmed as the next Speaker of the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, which commences on January 7, 2013. He replaces Justice Joyce Bamford Addo who has been the Speaker of Parliament since January 2009. Hon. Doe Adjaho who is also the MP-elect for Ave-Avenor in the Volta region would be assisted by the Foreign Affairs Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni who has been selected as the First Deputy Speaker. Hon. Adjaho will therefore have to vacate his seat in accordance with Article 97 (1) b which stipulates that “a Member shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he is officially sworn in as the Speaker of Parliament. Hon. Alhassan Azong of the PNC and a Minister of State in charge of Public Sector Reforms has been selected as the Second Speaker of Parliament.
